SEXMOG NOGGIN 17TH JULY 2024. VISIT TO PEVENSEY CASTLE AND LUNCH AT SMUGGLERS RESTAURANT.
John Sillicorn had organised a day in Pevensey followed by lunch afterwards. Around 22 people took part on a sunny day. Pevensey itself, being a coastal port, became a member of the prestigious Cinque Ports system with a Royal Charter granted by King John in1207.
Our first port of call was Pevensey Castle which dates back over 16 centuries beginning as a large Roman fort and is said to be the landing place for William the Conquerer. It later became a Norman castle and was strengthened against the Spanish Armada in 1588. John had arranged for an English Heritage guide to take us through a very comprehensive Castle history which was fascinating.
A short walk across the road took us to the Smugglers Restaurant where we had an excellent, and very reasonably priced three course lunch. We were all very impressed with Smugglers and hopefully will return again.
Thanks to John for organising the interesting day.
Thanks to April Wright, Maggie Cornish and David Neary for the photos.
